Overnight, Rajamanikyam had turned into a comedy! Ironic, considering there was not a single comedy scene in the script. I thought it definitely sounded exciting in his voice.
Later, when I visited his home, he decoded his dialogues in Thiruvananthapuram slang. After pondering over Mammukka’s idea, I realised that the slang will add an edge to the film. Of course, we knew that the story about a son, who is abandoned by a mom, is not anything new. Rajamanickyam was never intended to be a comedy in the first place: It was designed as a family-action film. That is why even before Rajamanikyam, I had approached him with a story.Įven today, I consciously keep a distance from him-he is the big screen and I am just an audience! When Rajamanikyam fell into my lap, Mammukka (as he is fondly called) asked me two questions-1) Did I like the subject? 2) Can Rajamanikyam speak the Thiruvananthapuram slang? His second question stumped me for various reasons. Even when I was biding my time to get into direction, I knew he was going to be the hero of my film.
It carried on even after I entered cinema as an assistant director. To me, Mammootty epitomised cinema! He was the actor I grew up idolising.
